ITIL Foundation Certification Course

8/6/2012

Last week I attended a 3 day training course which covered the ITIL practices and procedures.  The class was geared towards prepping you to pass the exam that is given at the end of the last day.  The training was very timely in my study for the DCD exam, as it covered the basic IT processes around design, change control and even DR.
If you have seen some of the documents in the latest exam blueprint, you may have noticed several that reference ITIL v3 processes.  The one titled "Implementing ITIL v3 Capacity Management in a VMware environment" in section 2.5 is one example.
As for the exam, it consits of 40 multiple choice questions that were much more difficult than I expected.
After waiting over the weekend for the results to be emailed out, I was happy to find out today that I had passed!

vSphere 5 Profile-Driven Storage- What can it do for you?

Depending on the size of your VMware environment, you may have detailed steps to follow when deploying virtual machines.   These steps should include gathering requirements for the virtual machines disks, and selecting the right datastore to meet the requirements for performance and availability.
Profile-Driven Storage, accessed from VM Storage Profiles on the Home page in vCenter, can help decrease the administration steps required to deploy a virtual machine and ensure it gets deployed to the correct datastore.

A bit more detail on VM Storage Profiles -
Storage Profiles allow you to assign information about your storage array, or characteristics, such as the RAID type and performance level.  You can create profiles with any information that is meaningful to you and your environment.
There are two kinds of Storage Profiles, User Defined and Array Aware (VASA).  If your storage vendor supports the latest vStorage API’s, it can provide the characteristics of the back end storage, such as RAID level and if the storage is replicated.  If your array does not support these API’s you can create the User-Defined Storage Profiles with information about your array, or create tier levels such as gold, silver and bronze.

I recently implemented this for a deployment of Microsoft SQL server virtual machines that had higher I/O performing datastores created specifically for SQL.

-For detailed steps on Configuring VM Storage Profiles, you can view and download the document from the Presentations page.

VMware VCAP5-DCD Studying

Since the announcement of the version 5 exam, I am back to studying again!  I have been studying for 6 months for version 4 until I put it on hold in February.  The deadline of February 29th for current VCP 4's to be able to take the version 5 exam without having to attend the class had me shift focus to that.  Luckily I passed the VCP 5 February 27th.Here is a list of what I have been using to prepare for the exam:
VMware vSphere Design – This is a fantastic resource and the only book I have found, other than the design workshop material, that focuses on vSphere design.  Even though it is version 4, the design concepts and choices should be the same.
VMware vSphere 5 Clustering Technical Deepdive – With HA and clustering completely redesigned in vSphere 5 this book has very detailed info on the new features. It not only covers the new HA design but resource pools, SDRS and vMotion.  I have had the opportunity to perform several upgrades to vSphere 5 and currently administer a large vSphere 5 environment.  This has helped in seeing the new options and features, and the different design choices available.
VMware vSphere: Design Workshop  – I attended the 4.1 course and thought it was one of the best VMware classes I have taken.  Reviewing the booklet and the design examples gives the details of the VMware specific design steps. If you are new to design I would recommend attending this course.
DRBC Design – Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Fundamentals – This is a free course on MyLearn and Partner University covering SRM and BC/DR fundamentals.
ProfessionalVMware vBrownBags – Fantastic resources covering the specific topics of the VCAP exam from design fundamentals to technical details.  Listen carefully during the sessions and you can get a lot of tidbits and insight on the exam.
Exam UI Demo – The video demonstrates how the Visio like diagram interface works so you can practice ahead of time.
Virtualization of Business Critical Applications (VBCA) – These are courses available on the Partner University site that focus on virtualizing SLQ and Oracle database servers and Exchange Server 2010.  I am not sure if these areas will be on the exam, but the information was quite detailed.  If you work for a VMware partner you may want to check the out.
If you are like me and pay for the exam out of your own pocket, you want to be as prepared as possible before taking the exam!
